From January to February 2023, the Capc welcomes the British artist Joshua Leon.
His residency is part of the new Magnetic Residency programme supported by Fluxus and the French Institute of the United Kingdom. This programme allows British artists to come to France for a residency and vice versa. At the Capc, Joshua Leon will work on the history of the Marranos, the Jewish immigrant communities from Portugal and Spain who were forcibly converted to Catholicism and continued to practice their religion in secret. Interested in the all but hidden, the artist will conduct research in the archives of Bordeaux Metropole, the departmental archives of Gironde as well as the archives of Bayonne while meeting with non-profit organisations. With this research Joshua will continue work for his first publication.
Joshua Leon is a poet, writer and visual artist. Drawing on Jewish history, his work explores the potential of lament as a critical tool. His exhibitions and performances are informed by his writing and historical research and often materialise in shared moments of food and drink or correspondence. By researching Jewish History for displacements associated with secrets, he questions notions of ownership and belonging. He has recently presented his work in the following exhibitions: Attendance(s) Close to the Close, Daily Practice, Rotterdam and Governmental Fires, Futura, Prague (2021); An Incomplete A-Z of Art and Poetry, Mahler + LeWitt Studios, London (2022).
Joshua Leon's residency is part of Magnetic, Fluxus Art Projects' new artist residency programme.
Fluxus Art Projects and its Magnetic programme are supported by the Institut français du Royaume-Uni, the Institut Français, the ministère de la Culture, the ministère de l’Europe et des Affaires étrangères, Arts Council England, Creative Scotland, Arts Council of Wales/Wales Arts International, Arts Council of Northern Ireland, the British Council and its Patrons.
